Maibocuf wants smaller council, and a decision on the issue now By BRAD REAUME The Champion Rick Malboeuf wants to reduce the size of Milton council from 10 members to six. 'he new regional councillor representingMilton's urban area provided the necessary notice of motion at Monday night's council meeting. "In these times of increased user tees, potential staff reductions and maybe increasing taxes il is imperative that we set an example.' said Mr. Malboeut'. He said he is on record as supporting scaling back council. Under his plan there would be six councillors and a mayor, including one councillor for each ward and one regional councillor each for urban and rural Milton. Any changes should take effeet for the next munici- pal election, slated for the autumn of 2000, he said. "The impending budget is the main reason for going with this early in the term,' said Mr. Malboeuf. "We're going to be asking the ratepayers to take less service so we have to set the example.- He said he was absolutely opposed to any increase in local taxes. Mr. Malboeuf added, if there is a sug- gestion to boost user fees, he will insist that separate accounts bc kept for various fées to make certain they are applied where they were collected. "We have to show leadership and responsibility in the budget process," he said.
