Recently in Brampton mayors and regional chairs from the GTA agreed to write Ontario Transport Minister Tony Clement in hopes of convincing the province to change the existing legislation. The Highway Trafic Act does not permit the use of photo enforcement technology because the Iaw attributes any type of traffic violation, such as speeding or unsafe lane changes, to the driver and not the registered owner of the vehicle. "I don't buy the argument that the province is giv- ing us," said Aurora Mayor Tim Jones. Town wants business sponsorship By BRAD REAUME The Champian Hand in hand wiîh attempts lu gel money from sponsors, the Town of Milton will adopt guidelines. One of the key planks in the guideline policy is that the Town will accept alcohol advertising, but only when youths are flot involved. The Town will flot accept tobac- co sponsorships dollars at ail. Much of the detail cornes from a similar policy adopted by Aurora, according to a report hy Jennifer Reynolds, the municipal leisure services director. There are a number of areas where spon- sorships have already been implemented such as the Santa Claus Parade, arcna board advertising, at Canada Day festivi- tics, and in the Lions Sports Park. There were questions from counicillors on the potential of issuing tax receipts for donated goods or services. Town staff said clarification will be made with Revenue Canada on the issue. Currcntly, donationîs must he quantifiable and they must mccl criteria which distinguishes them lromn saleable goods, according 10 municipal direetor of corporale services Jini MeQucen. Councillor John Challinor poinîcd out thal Ihere is no tax receîpt îssued wheîî someone purchases a hospital lotlcry tick- et, even though such a purchase s in essence a donation 10 the hospital itself. According 10 Mr. McQueen the Town bas only issued tax receipts for donations that were tangible with an appraiscd value. Mr. Challinor said the Town should con- sider sclling the name of local lacilities Io a corporate sponsor. He cxplained the practice bas alrcady heen occurring "through the hack door" hy naming parks ater service clubs which contributed 10 them.
