12-The Cariadian Champion, Tuesday, January 13, 1998 Jacques new in Merchants' net[Iil By STEVE LsBLANC Special ta The Champion One Merchants deal camne o frVition while another tlli apart as Provincial Jr. A League trad- ing came 10 a close Saturday. In the tradition of signing French goalies for the playoffs, Milton acquired 19-year-old Daniel Jacques from the Guelph Stormn. Brampton dropped Daniel Jacques addition of Chris Tbompson fmom Banrie - and became somnewhat expendabie. In seven games he posted four wîns and three losses plus a respectable 2.88 goals-against average. He spent much of iast season as the number one man with Metro's Pickering Panthers and was picked up by the Jr. C Erin Shamrocks for their playoff mun. Jacques replaces David Cinelli, who bas been sent to Metro's North York Canadians. "'We just didn't feel we were getting the same level of play from David (Cinelli) that we had been from Jeremy (Wenzel)," said Milton head coach Marty Williamson Friday night. One night later his hopes for acquiring rugged right winger Tim O'Brien fell by the way- side. Burlington's last-minute change of heart put the brakes on the seemingly done deal. The 20-year-old wouid have added a lot of toughness to the forward lines - something Milton wili need in the later rounds of the piayoffs against teams like Brampton and Rayside-Balfour. Mark Cooper was expected t0 join Cineili in North York but at the moment is in hockey limibo. i-is Merchant card bas been turned in - as have those of' Cinelli, Travis Riggin and Steve Clarke - but he could still resign with the team. Whiie trading is through for another year, teams can still sign players right up until next month's playoffs begin. Meanwhile, Jeff Seeds and Jamie Fitzgibbon have been reassigned to fuil-time duty with Erin, Milton's Jr. C affili- ate. The move, according to Williamson, wiii keep them in game shape should their ser- vices be required in the play- offs. On a tear Darren Haydar isn't content to just have bis name in the record books - be wants it near the top of the list. Having scored 12 goals in the past five games, be's now up to 57 on the season. Witb 13 games remaining. be stands an excellent chance of moving past Jim McGroarty (witb 65 in 1991/92) for second-place on the Provincial Jr. A League season scoring list. Breaking Steve Walker's league record of 75 isn't out of the question eitber.
