Halton regional council agreed to inake the intersection of Derry and Twiss rosds a four- way stop. Currently it is only a three- way stop. In its present form motorista traveling westbound on Derry Road are not required to stop sE the intersection. Traffic in al other directions faces stop signs. 'Me arrangement wus made due tu high volumes of traffic westbound in the evenings. However, traffic counts suggest move- ment through the intersection is becoming more complex, which justifies the four- way stop control. The four-way stop will be preceded by the installation of warnîng signs. Conversion to a four-way stop will take place on December 15. Waste award Halton was recently honoured with the 1997 Special Waste Management Excellence Award from the Solid Waste Association of North America. The award recognizes the design, con- venience and public participation of the Household Hazardous Waste Depot Prograro and the landfill on Highway 25 in Milton. They also commended Halton's' approach, which includes combining an annual compost giveaway with participa- tion at the depot. 'Mis year 1,630 people took part in the compost giveaway program, about the samne number as last year. Traffic at the household hazardous waste depot significantly picked up, which helped raise awareness of the program, according to Brent Marshall, regional commissioner of planning and public works. Landfill harvest Approximately 37 acrea of soybeans were recently harvested from unused, land at the Halton landfill site. The 1,100 bushels of soybeana will be sold and the money quadrupled by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for a $50,000 donation to help world hunger. A winter wheat crop was planted the saine day the soybeans were harvested and it should be ready in the early summer. Farm ers and churcli groups donated their time, equipment and supplies to help make the project a succesa, according to a report by rewgional public works commissioner Brent Marshal., Credit where credit is due The issue of whether Halton Region will accept letters of credit from credit unions will be deferred until January. Region staff are concemed because cred- it unions do not have the samne government guaranteed protection as chartered banks. Regional commissioner of corporate ser- vices Joe Rinaldo said accepting several letters of credit from credit unions could endanger Halton's triple A credit rating. That rating savcs Halton taxpayers con- sîderable money cach year. Deferral of the issue will allow staff to strike a specific counicil policy, the merits of which the new regional council can debate. III
