In an entirely specious and facile tone he questioned the assertion that Bill 160 is undemocratic. Along witb Mr. Muetin's letter, a letter of mine critîcal of Bill 160 also appeared in the November 4 issue of the Champion. As Mr. Timbers named me along witb Tom Martin as holding opinions on Bill 160 to which be takes exception, I feel honour-bound to issue the following chal- lenge to bim. Sir, defend your position on Bill 160 in a public debate. The resolution shaîl be: "Be it oesolved that Bill 160 will cause long- term damage to public education in Ontario." You can defend the 'Nays'. Choose any paetner you want. 1 suggest you staft with our MPP, Ted Cbudleigb. I will invite Mr. Martin to join me in presenting the case for the 'Ayes' - We could hold the debate on neutral turf sucb as a municipal meeting roomn and ask the editor of The Champion to serve us moderator. Ibis debate would serve two purposes: It would pmovide the public witb a demo- cratic forum in whicb to engage in the izqiso.- -zirrotindinu Bill 160: this would be the only form of local democratic partici- Can v pation in Bill 160 that anyone will ever atructur have. school o It would provide some instructive role but stillI modelling for Mr. Timbers and those of bis Privati persuasion on what democracy is and how againut t it works. to every Apparently they have forgotten. I arn genuinely cunious as to where this extra money bas been going. These increases in funding could bave decreased class sizes significantly and increased quality. Has the money gone to consul- tants, administrators, 'educrats', unions, etc? The increuse in spending seems to have had little effect on quality or class sizes. Academic standards continue to be lax and disruptive behaviour in the classroom ignored. The current system mun by our achool hourds is incompetent and badly needed of un overbaul a decade ago. It bas been because previous Ontario govemnments have not had the stomach to take on the task. Kudos to Mike Harri for initiating some desperately need changes. 1 would like to pose a suggestion to Ted Wei don ie develop an educational infra- e where parents could choose a utaide of the state-run monopoly, be funded by the general tax base? achools could therefore compete he state schools with equal acces one. ~s only within the context of com- will the taxpayer receive value for Ilar and more importantly will stu- ceive the education they are being James Masu< Milton couIdn't have e t without you Dear Editor: This letter is regarding the United Wuy of Milton's golf and mini-puts toumaments of whicb Donalduon Bourgon Financial Services was s major sponsor.
