Retired Halton cop found guilty A Halton Regional Police inspec- tor wha tried ta caver up the heat- ing of a murder suspect by ane af his officers han been found guilty of attempting ta obstruct justice. Les Graham, who han retired [rom the Halton farce, was spared jail and given a 12-month candi- tional sentence Tuesday by Mr. Justice Antan Zuraw of Ontario Court (provincial division) in Hamilton. That means the former Milton inspector will serve hie sentence at home without supervision. He will have ta report regularly ta a proba- tion officer. Judge Zuraw found Mr. Graham, 52, guilty of scheming ta destroy a videotape showing Halton police Detective Doug Ford slapping a suspect twice in the head during a Les Graham 1995 interrogation. The Champion is not naming the murder suspect or publishing details of the case, which is before tise courts. Thse tape shows Det. Ford telling tise murder suspect he was going to "play hardball" with him before the officer strikes the suspect. The officer also threatened ta punch the cawering suspect as a videotape camera recorded the entire incident. At the time, Mr. Graham was in charge of the force's elite major crime unit. Judge Zuraw found that the inspectar had discussed with athers the various options they had in get- ting rid of the damning tape. But that in itself did nat amount ta try- ing to obstruct justice, he ntled. Mr. Graham broke the law when he spoke pnivately with one reluc- tant officer, Det. John Stonehili, and told him they were going ta say the assault had not happened, Judge Zuraw said. *o»e GRAHAM on page 7 - a . --rc 1MIHE I J & D TIRE SALES & SERVICE 555 Main Street East, Milton 876-4788 à.- Weekend [h ý1. » 8- 0 0
