Fire department is worried over student safety in strike By STEVE LeBLANC Special to The Champion A skeleton staff won't be able to safeguard students in the event of a fire. The Milton Fire Department has been voicing this message throughout the week, in light of Monday's looming teachers strike. "We're not taking sides, we just want parents to know that a danger does exist," said fire department spokesman Mark Cross. The potential danger he alludes to surrounds schools staying open despite the absence of teachers. Mr. Cross stressed that a principal and vice-principal can't be expected to mobilize a large number of students if a fire breaks out. "Our biggest concem is that schools will remain open with just one or two adults responsible for a whole group of students. "If there is a fire, how will they round up the students, get them out and go back and look for any missing children?" Mr. Cross asked. "It's fine to say that they (principals) could enact the inclement weather warning and send kids home if they recognize the danger later on, but if parents are working and can't pick up their kids the danger continues for the rest of that day." Mr. Cross said he had no idea who would be liable if a student was hurt or killed under these conditions. At press time, it was uncertain whether schools would remain open next week. In accordance with the Education Act, the board can only close schools in the interest of student safety and inclement weather. Store shows heart Outdoor get-togethers at Deborah's Home are a little cozier with the donation of a unique table by the Cashway Building Centre. The Main Street business recently donated a wheelchair-acces- sible picnic table, designed and built by an employee. "I am very pleased that our employees selected Deborah's 'Home to receive the Cashway picnic table," said Dianne Laughlin, manager of the Milton store. The Canadian-owned Cashway Building Centres is donating 57 itables across the province. The Milton table is worth $800, store officials say. Milton is an indicator of what's happening in the economy of Ontario." Mr. Hunter added the evening should be informative and a good opportunity to ask questions of people who often speak only at $150 a plate dinners.
