MILTON PUWLIC L~~ A Metroland Conmmunity Newspaper Vol. 138 No. 68 Friday October 17, 1997 40 Pages 75e (GST inctuded) - Howard says she's tired of a mostly tired council By BRAD REA1JME The Champion Thoroughly frustrated, Ward 3 Councillor Marion Howard said she has had enough of municipal politics and will flot run for a third term. Feeling as if she was banging her head against the watts of politics and bureaucracy, Ms Howard briefly toyed with the idea of running for mayor. "I hate flot carrying things thmough," she said. "But there are lots of other people who can achieve things." In the end she decided that she was unsuited to play- ing the game and bowed out of municipal politica. Given a five-way race for two local counicil seats in Nassagaweya, Ms Howard said she la content that there will be quality representation for ber con- stîtuents. "l'm tired and frustrated," she said. "tt wasn't really my bag. I tried as hard as 1 possibly could but 1 have a philosophical conflict with moat of council." Ms Howard said she feels counicillors are elected to be community leaders rather than polîsters. Ms Howard said substantial consultation adds little to, the procesa and slows it down. She believes that counicillors ate elected to take a leadership role. "I'm not the political type, I guesa. t don't think that taking three or four years to make something happen is an achievement. Especially when it la obvious there is a problem from day one." She attributed excessive consultation to Councillor Gerry Brooks, in particular. "I've neyer seen hlm make a decision," she said. Yet, "He bringa everyone in and makes them believe they have a voice." She contenda Councillor Brooks "shows no leader- ship." Ms Howard aimed another of ber broadsides at Mayor Gord Krantz, saying he la constantly taking credit for any ideas that come up. She said a recent job description for elected offi- ciaIs, developed by staff, merely stated that the mayor's job conformed to what he was doi ng. "It said the mayor should meet and greet but said nothing about leadership or carrying the.agenda," she recalled. "I think the mayor should lead and should set HoUp nosded 80 oldsrly May rieai Three blind or visually impaired Allendale residents require vol- unteer shoppers, readers and visitors. Ms Howard said many counicillors think that attempts Io change the statua quo are condemnations of previous policies. However, that is flot the case, she stressed, explain- ing that things just require fine tuning over the years because dynamics change. She said she was happy that she was able to help put an end to rural estate subdivision approvals. The issue was the main reason she decided to mun for council two terma ago. "Maintaining the rural character la important," ahe said. "It's important to have that diveraity of land- scapea in Halton. We have a pocket of nature that everyone can enjoy." Ms Howard condemned counicil for flot taking charge of the agenda and planning for the future. *se. COUNCILLOR on page 18 327 Broute St. S.
