Alex Cooke's new book 'Milton Area Biographies, Vol Il' is e more DATELINE on page 21 If you're a natura-1 gas -nwab-l customer, read on Head lice .. • from LOUSY on page 18 under the tap instead of in the shower to ensure the product isn't swallowed or doesn't get on the rest of the body. A towel should be held tightly over the cyes white rinsing and the person applying the product should wear gloves. After the hair is dried the scalp should be checked in natural light by separating the hair. Live lice should be puiled out and squashed. Some eggs may not be killed by the treatment and will need to be removed. Ms Gurba says nit combs will pull dead casings out of the hair but aren't 100 per cent effective at removing the eggs close to the scalp. Those should be pulled down the hair shaft with the thumb and first fin- ger. "If you see anything a half-inch away from the scalp it is not a problem, it's an empty shell," says Ms Gurba. "You need to worry about the ones that are close to the scalp." She says that some of the treatment products may need to be repeated in seven days. After the treatment has been done Ms Gurba says the next step is informing peo- ple who may have had head to head con- tact with the infested person, and a child's school or day care centre. A child can usu- ally return to school after they have been treated. "If you don't do it (inform people), you are going to get head lice back. The biggest reason for re-infestation is head to head contact with someone who didn't know he or she had head lice," says Ms Gurba. Ms Gurba says extensive cleaning after head lice have been discovered isn't nec- essary. She says an ordinary houseclean- ing is ail that is required and any louse that is found off the head shouldn't be a big concern because it is injured or dying, and can't get back on the head. She adds head lice infestations have nothing to do with cleanliness and lice actually prefer clean hair over dirty hair. She adds lice can't be transmitted from animais.
