The Minister of Natural Resources (MNR) is moving ahead with tax reduc- tions that encourage strong environmental practices on conservation landa. "Conservation lands are highly signiti- cant and contribute to provincial conserva- tion and natural heritage objectives," said Minister Chris Hodgson. "Landowners will benefit from a streamlined tax sys- tem." According to the MNR, information wiIl he sent to eligible land owners. In order to qualify the property must be maintained as conservation land. The plan will have the most impact (in the Halton Region Conservation Authority (HRCA), which owns substantial parcels of such lands. "The provincc should have long ago crc- ated this category of property f'or taxation purposes,' said Brian Penman, HRCA chair. -Currently the land under Kelso Lake is assessed as residential property and nothing could be more absurd than that." -5
