At lesat one Milton woman keeps doing it over and over again. This year will be no different for Betty Ingle, wbo îndividually raises an average of $2.000 a year for cancer research in the Milton Terry Fox Run. Seeing family members and frienda lose their batties witb cancer, coupled witb her own experience witb the disesse two years ago, are ber driving forces, she says. "I've lost a number of fasnily members to cancer - my father and lots of friends. I have several frienda fighting cancer right now." Ms Ingle wiII be a star in more ways than one at this year's September 14 mn. Tbe Milton real estate agent, also hard at work in her busy career, bas been chosen as Milton's 1997 Teny's Team Member. "Sbe bas been tbe bigbest pledge eamer of the Terry Fox Run in Milton a number of times," says Kim Thomas, wbo is organizing the mn witb ber busband Craig. "She is also a wonderful supporter of a number oU c~barities. We feel very honoured to bave ber as Milton's 1997 Terry's Team Member." Once voted tbe town's Citizen oftbe Year, Ms Ingle neyer expected to personally benefit from the funds raised for cancer research, but at Cbristmas in 1995 doctors discovered a cancerous tumour in one of ber breasta. Ms Ingle wss lucky. The cancer was removed dur- ing two operations followed by radiation treatments, and there's no sign of the devastating disease's retum. Sbe credits new tecbnology for finding tise deepiy hidden tumour, which was caught early enough for successful treatment. On April 12, 1980 at St. John's, Newfoundland Terry Fox dipped bis artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean and set off on bis cross-Canada Marathon of Hope to mise money for cancer research. After capturing the collective soul of Canadians, Terry was foreed to end bis mn on September 1, 1980 when cancer spread to bis lunga. He died leas tban a year later. Determined to realize Terry's dream oU a world without cancer, Canadians picked up wbere be left off. Betty Ingle bas been chouan as Terry's Teem Member. Since Uic Marathon of Hope hegan, more than $180 million bas been raised for cancer research. And Canadians are no longer alone in commemorat- ing the iegacy of Terry Fox. Ms Ingle wiil be on band for opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. The celebration will include a fitness demon- stration and warm Up. Cops looking for cash to cope By HOWARD MOZEL Special to The Champion Halton's Police Chief will be asking the region for more than $500.000 in the future to patrol portions of bigbways downioaded from the province. In a report prepared for the Halton Regional Police Services Board, Peter Campbell explained that, after four years, the total annualized cost of additional resources to patrol Higbwaya 5 and 25 will he $523,400. By January 1, 1998 Halton Region will be on the hook for everytbing from the policing to maintenance of an additionai 52.7 kms worth of bigbways.
