The Canadian champion, Tuesday, June 24, 1997 -23 Magic boys sweep Friendship tourney Earning a four-game sweep on the weekend, the Magic under- 15 boys soccer team took top honours at the 1997 Milton Friendship Toumrament. Led by head coach Steve Griffin, the hometown boys outscored their opposition 14-3 and defeated Chinguacousy 3-1 n the championship finals. Onel Martino provided bis team with a one-goal cushion early on while Kyle Grant and tan Robinson sealed the deal with second-half scores. Backstopping the pack was Craig Oliveira, who was rock solid through the toumrament. "The win this weekend was incredible," said Griffin, whose Knuckles-sponsored crew has won lhree tournamenîs so far Ibis season. "This was our fourth toumnament in a month and the guys were very tired. Il's amazing what lhey pullcd off." Martino tallied twice to give Milton a 2-I victory over Guelph in their opening bout. From there, they knocked off Orillia 4-I and Chinguacousy 5-0. Stefan Linder led againat Chinguacousy with a pair of goals while Martino, Robinson and Rufus Williams added sin- gles. Scoring in the Orillia tilt were Grant, Peter Cannataro, Andrew Gluck and Joel Petkoff. Guelph edged Orillia 2-I in the under-15 consolation game. Il was feast or famine for the under-14 boys crew, who scored four limes against Welland, but were blanked in their other three games includ- ing a 2-0 bass to Niagara in the championsbip match. Andrew Casa, Scott Murray, Connor Sweeney snd Quinn Young found the mark in Milton's only win. Their other round-robin matches included another 2-0 bass to Niagara and a no-score stalemate with Burlinglon. Welland pounded Burlington 4-I for the consolation title. Mattbew Casa was the under- 10 boys' lone scorer this past wcekend, as bis team bast four straigbt matches. Tbey dropped a 2-0 decision to Flamboro in the consolation final. Milton also suffered defeat at the banda of Brampton (6-0) and Chinguacousy (4-1) as well as to Flamboro (3-0) in their initial confrontation. It was Brampton 4-0 over Cbinguacousy in the champi- onship game.
