His crew won the game and went on to capture the novice division title. Kid Mavs wrap up dad's day gift By STEVE LeBLANC Special to The Champion Creighton Reid couldn't have picked a better Father's Day gift for dear old dad than the one he offered up Sunday at Tonelli Arena. The final unwrapping came at roughly 6:30 p.m. when he slammed home an over- time winner past Oakville goalie Marc- Thomas Nano to give his novice Mavericks a 6-5 victory and the Milton Invitational Tourament title. With a dual role of father and coach, John Reid said winning the championship had topped his wish list for Sunday and that Creighton's game-winning goal was icing on the cake. "I certainly didn't demand or expect my son to score the game winner," said a jubi- lant coach Reid, moments after his novices won the first tournament of their still- young lacrosse careers. "These guys really wanted the title and worked hard all week- end ta get i" The Mavericks erased three separate Oakville leads throughout the champi- onship tilt, before moving ahead with two quick goals midway through the third. Hawks sniper Reggie Traccitto completed a hat-trick two minutes later and the teams wauld ga ta sudden-death. Providing a great lead pass on Reid's winner - which came at 4:19 - was Scott Collard, who also scored in the sec- ond and collected four other goals earlier in the weekend. Reid meanwhile, turned in a four-point showcase in the finals and fin- ished the three-day tournament with 10. Nate Grenke came up with big saves against Oakville, and helped Milton beat Windsor 7-2 and Pelham 10-5 in round- robin play. This earned them a first-place seating and opening round bye in the playoffs. They humbled Pelham 9-3 in a semifinal rematch. Matt Chuchmach led team scor- ing with nine goals and four assists over the four games while Matt Lenardon and Elgin Reid (no relation to Creighton) were other offensive standouts. Making up the rest of the championship team were Field Burgoyne, Conor Ferguson, Chris Flemington, Robbie Hunt, Jeff Kitchen, Chris Pedulla, Ashley Rutz and Eric Taylor. Midgets suffer heartbreak The Milton midgets were equal to Windsor everywhere but on the score sheet and standings - unfortunately, where it counts the most. The Warlocks initially stole a first-place seating and first-round bye away from the Mavericks by a single goal. The two teams, who tied their round-robin contest 8-8, had both destroyed Bolton/Caledon - only Windsor did so by a 16-0 count and Milton by a 15-0 margin. Twenty-six hours after edging Milton out of the number one spot, Windsor did so again with a 7-6 squeaker in the cham- pionship finals. Playing catch-up al] night, they forced overtime in the final two-and- a-half minutes of the third and captured gold just 45 seconds into the extra session. Scott Stapleford provided the heroics with a well-aimed overhand past Ryan Young, while teammate Francis Dostie scored the final equalizer. The Warlocks were the comeback kids in their round- robin tilt with Milton as well, stringing together a 4-1 third period to eventually draw even. Scoring for the home team in the cham- pionship match were Jason Ford with a pair and Kyle Artem, Derek Birnie, Derek Mewhinney and Jacob Vanderbreggen with singles. Milton trimmed Brantford 9-7 in the quarterfinals and smoked Oakville 8-2 in the semis. Peewees' offence disappears It was feast or famine for the peewee Mavericks Sunday. They began their championship run with a 9-2 semifinal pounding to Brantford, but once in the show could only muster a third of that out- put for a 7-3 loss to London. Further disheartening was their 2-0 lead after the first period. From that point on only Kyle Goertz was able to hit mesh at the midway mark of the second. London meanwhile, tagged five goals in the middle stanza to completely turn the tables on their hosts. Their were assisted in their scoring campaign by Milton's lack o discipline. The host crew gave up thre power-play goals. With the exception of the final game, th Mavericks turned in geat defence over th weekend and gave up only six goals e route to the finals. They defeated Oakvill 4-1 and Mississauga 5-3 in round-robit play. Anchoring their tournament run wer Goertz, Jonathan Ram, Ian Robertson Adam Rutz, Matt Decaire and Michae Novak. Tykes, bantams fall Both the Milton tykes and bantam failed to reach the finals, despite stron tournament showings. This was a huge surprise in the tyke case, as they unloaded 21 goals in the two round-'obin outings and were score onjust twice. f e e e n e e S, ir d Dutchmen snap Milton's streak The Flying Dutchmen struck early and often to snap the Milton Mavericks' four-game unbeaten streak Thursday night in Owen Sound. They needed just 20 seconds to put themselves on the score sheet, and used the balance of the contest to exact a 15-6 pound- ing on their West Division counterparts. A lack of both discipline and scoring on Milton's part ruined what promised to be an exciting battle - particularly after the Mavericks' 6-5 comeback against Mimico and 15-15 draw with Orillia the previous weekend. Jimmy Leworthy Jr. was completely shut out while captain Andrew Hartholt was restricted to three assists and no goals. Owen Sound enjoyed 5-1 and 8-3 period leads en route to victo- ry. They scored a handful of powerplay goals along the way. Jason Berner anchored the Dutchmen's attack with four goals and an assist while Andrew Reid was the key play maker with five helpers and a single tally. Kevin Eansor was somewhat lacklustre in Milton's cage. He received little defensive help trom his teammates - who had been largely successful in their own end over the past few weeks. Rookie Cory Leigh was the only multi-goal scorer for the Mavericks, with second and third period tallies. Jeff Currie con- tributed a goal and an assist while Craig Hedley, Brent Moyer and Paul Wade each scored once. Milton maintained a three-point lead on Guelph for the fourth and final Founder's Cup playoff spot in the West with a 15-1 t tri- umph over the Huntsville Hawks Saturday night. This pushed their season record to 10-5-1. Hartholt and Leworthy Jr. redeemed themselves with 10-point showings. Hartholt scored six times and added four helpers while Leworthy Jr. collected six assists and four goals. Hedley meanwhile, tallied twice. The Mavericks led the entire way with 5-2 and 9-6 period leads. Mavericks notes: Milton finally secured the rights of Mark Biesel late last week. The veteran junior had been sitting out for the past two months, but donned a Maverick jersey Saturday in Huntsville. He'Il provide an added weapon in Milton's offence.
