Martha Gleeson was one of just 10 instructors province-wide to receive a coach-of-the-year award from the Toronto Raptors April 8 at SkyDome, during thctr showdown with the Washington Bullets. While the Ontario Baskeîball Association (OBA) has recognized outstanding coaching in the past, this was the tirst year they coordinatcd the presentations with the local NBA franchise. Gleeson, the heart and soul of the Milton Monarch program, was named top midget coach in the entire province. Her commemnorative plaque - signed by Isiah Thomas - waa presented by Toronto's public relations manager AI Quarece at hall time. "It (the award) came as a big surprise, I'm not even sure who nominated me," said Gleeson, a longtime coach at both the high achool and club level. "Being out there at hall court and receiving an award was quite a thrill." Her initiation into coaching followed a remarkable playing career at Leaminglon l-igh School, and later with Western University where she helped the Mustangs win three national tilles. She split her duties between player and coach during the last of those championshipa. After succesaful periods instructing in Brantford and Preston shte moved to Milton, where among numerous accolades she led Our Lady of Victory'a boys team lu a regional championship and the league finals. One of her beat memories - in her 30-plus years in basketball - came three years ago when she led the Monarch bantam girls to the gold medal ai the AA Ontario championships. "I really thought we were only a single A teamn that year, but the girls played their hearts out and just kept winning," Gleeson recalled. Part of that relay team was seven-year-old Shannon Laing, who had a fairly good day berself with a handful of personal records. Beginning with a meet record of 9.8s in the eigbt-and-under girls 60m, an entire second off the old mark, she settled into a nice groove and took more than two seconds off ber 200m standard, clocking in at 36.7. She later establisbed a new record in the shot put, 5.31 lm, and finished second in the long jump, with a personal best of 2.83m.
