The fifth edition of the annual event will take place April 21. | photo by Eric Riehl -- Oakville Beaver-- @Halton_ Photog Swim club seventh at masters provincials Despite sending a relatively small team to the recent Ontario Masters Swimming Championships, Oakville Masters Swim Club finished seventh overall out of 52 competing clubs. The Oakville club was led by the inspirational effort of 74-year-old Michael Liepner, who won three gold medals and added a silver. Sylvie Trembley added three gold and two silver, and Amie Peddle claimed three gold, a silver and a bronze. Oakville swimmers combined to win 11 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals, adding five fourth-place finishes and 23 other top-eight placings. The club finished with a combined team total of 1,549 points, a few points behind sixth-place Etobicoke Olympium Masters Club. The London Silver Dolphins, who hosted the meet, won the overall championship. "Our team had a blast," said Oakville head coach Mette Novais. "All our swimmers were swimming very fast and were supportive (of each other) and cheering loud." Also representing Oakville at provincials were Tracy Rieckelman, Jennifer Agnew, Suzanne Dickinson, Janice Gibbs, Sonia Lopes, Erin Whike, Susan Korsiak, Michael Parker, Kendra Olsen, Kirstie Hume, Kathy Jackson, Michael Laing, Brittany Sills, Heather Siebley, Michelle Rodine, Dustin Harding and Anna Parker. The next major event on the Oakville Masters Swim Club schedule is the Canadian nationals, which will take place May 17-20 in Ottawa. Many of the Oakville club's swimmers have already met qualifying standard times for the nationals. Oakville also hopes to send a number of swimmers to the FINA World Masters next year in Montreal. Annual Mercedes-Benz 10K next weekend The fifth edition of the annual Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10K will take place Sunday, April 21, with all races once again beginning and ending at Appleby College. In addition to the signature 10-kilometre race, the event will feature the Martin-Zandvliet Group of National Bank Financial 5K High School Challenge, in which students from Oakville and surrounding communities can compete for bragging rights as the fastest school in town. The Mercedes-Benz 10K will also feature a 5K run/walk, a 1K junior jog (ages 6-12) and a 300m toddler trot (ages 1-5). One lucky finisher will win a brand new Mercedes-Benz B-class.
