Also contributing to the Hornets' win at provincials were Sarah Campbell, Annabel Child, Madison Cote, Rachel D'Armiento, Amanda Guedikian, Katie Lengyel, Sophia Lombardo, Kaitlyn McMahon, Erin McPherson, Gillian Miller, Francesca Monte, Amelia Smith and Alexandria Wasik. Mike Cote, Pino D'Armiento, Steven Monte and Ruben Wallin also coach the team, Wendy Lengyel and Chantal Wallin are the trainers, and Rob McPherson is the manager. Ten players on the team also won OWHA gold as atom A players a year ago. Patricia Macdonald and Amanda Spence shared time in net for Oakville throughout the tournament. In the round robin, the Hornets blanked the Ottawa Ice Cats 5-0 and tied the Sirens 6-6 to finish first in their division. Trisha Kosak, Elizabeth Guest and McConnell coach the team, which also won the Golden Horseshoe Women's Hockey League title last month. This is just the second year Oakville has iced a team in senior play, which is for women aged 19 and older. "That's a real talented bunch of young ladies," said Turczyniak. Senior A Strong third-period play was a big factor in the senior A Hornets' ability to win the provincial AA championship. Oakville broke open tight games in the final frames of both the semifinal against the Toronto Crush and the title game against the Toronto Sirens. The Hornets were tied 1-1 with the Crush before exploding for five third-period markers to win 6-1, and Oakville scored six times in the third to rout the Sirens 9-3. Sam Poyton paced Oakville in the title game with three goals and three assists. Julie Allen added two goals and three helpers, Melissa Boal recorded a hat trick and an assist, and Lisa Crooker contributed a single. Melissa Oliver, Nicole Gooding, Carlee Eusepi, Stacey McConnell and Traci Galbraith also set up goals in the victory. Poyton had four goals in the Hornets' semifinal win over the Crush. Allen and Eusepi also tallied. Silver medallists The peewee BB and bantam AA Hornets each won their first five games at provincials before losses to the Whitby Wolves cost them the gold. The peewees defeated Whitby 3-0, Clarence Rockland Lightning 4-1 and Lindsay Lynx 3-0 to win their pool, then downed the North Simcoe Capitals 3-1 in the quarter-finals and the Nepean Wildcats 3-2 in the semis. Whitby upset the Hornets 1-0 in the final. In bantam play, Oakville posted three shutout wins in pool play, defeating the Thunder Bay Queens 2-0, Peterborough Ice Kats 1-0 and Kingston Ice Wolves 5-0. Following a 3-1 win over Sarnia in the quarter-finals and a 2-1 victory over London in the semis, the Hornets were downed 2-1 by the Wolves. "I think fatigue matters in this tournament more than people realize. Games are longer, the time on the ice is longer," he said. "We've done a ton of conditioning and off-ice training to be prepared for that fatigue. In the semifinals, I think that's where fatigue will start to play a major role." The atom AA Rangers, who won an OMHA title last month, travel to Scarborough. There, they'll face West Ferris (NOHA), London (GTHL), the Mississauga Braves (GTHL) and the West Hill Golden Hawks (host). The atom AAA Rangers, finalists at the OMHA championship tournament, will join the Niagara North Stars as the OMHA's representatives in Chatham. The GTHL's Toronto Jr. Canadiens, Alliance's Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs and host Chatham-Kent Cyclones round out the field. The peewee A Rangers, who claimed their first OMHA title less than a month ago, make the six-hour trek north to Temiskaming Shores, whose Puckhounds are the hosts. Also competing will be the NOHA's Hearst HLK, Alliance's Hamilton Huskies and GTHL's Meadowvale Mohawks. -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports N I W O T R E T EN !
