I also koop an assortment of dred years after their predecessors h ad been d ispersed and dispossessed of theh: property, had n 0 right any way as h ;iirs to the est1;1tes,~ If this was general, why all the church lands of Great B1itain, Germany, and other coun tries could be claimed on precisely the same grounds. These people had not a shadow of either legal or moral claim. They had no connection with the 8ociety of Jesus of the past century. and were only · connected with it by adopting the same name. They were not their descendants, and had no right of existence in Canada dt all. The $400,000 was not to come from t.he sale of t he f.s tates, but was set apart for the use of the Pope from any moneys b elonging to tho Province, and then the Lieutant-Gover nor . .wa11 authorized to sell the property, the receipts to be d e voted. to any legitimate purpose pertaining to t he Province. He aaid that he h oped the Protestants of Quebec would refuse to accept the $60,000 granted them by this infamous Act. Every Catholic country in the world had abolished the Jesuits. He believed in the separation of Church and Stat.e,and this principle was Yiolated in 't he Jesnit Estates Act. (Cheers.) This was also a roost objectionable feature of the bill, and one toward ·wliich every moral influence should be directed to re· str.iin, although they could not call upoa the Government simply on thie ground to d isallow it. The most objectionable thing was that a foreign potentate was asked to give his permission to P. British Government to legislate, and also asked to sanction the legislation. l e was not enough to say this was an insult to Her Majesty, it was totally inconsistent with the stability of good government in any country and a violation of the Brit.ish Constitution . This bill affected the people of the Dominion from end to end. It was 11ot a Provincial question at. all. The tea.tare~ of bhis Act brought it directly with in the jurisdiction of the Dominion Government. The Act was entirely unconstitut ional by Acts still on the 8ta.mte Book, and even if it were within the jurisdiction of the Quebec L egislature, the Dominiou Government was competent to disa.llow it as an injury to the majority of the peo· pie of Oa11ada. This movement was a cillm, deliberate, and intelliger.t mo vi~ ment of the people of Ontario. and of the Dominion, for an assertion of l;h eir civil and religious freedom for t.hemselves and their children, and also equally for their Roman Catholic friends iu every part of the D ominion.
