OSHAWA. 'From the Refo1'mer Oct. 17 Mr. ,Jonathan Porter was awarded first prize for his carriage team at the l3owmariville and Port Hope fairs. Mr. R. McLaughlin has placed three barrels of apples in his workshops for his men, to help themselves. M . H . Maxwell, while on his way home from Brooklin on Wednesday morning last, had the misfortune to get the collar bone of his right shoulder broken. His horse took fright at a team. Mr. S. J. H itll is again filling the pO;r'. tion of grain Inspector at the Oshawii Harbour. Mr. Hall is the right man in the ri~ht place ; his inspection gives satisfaction to buyer and seller. 1\1.·J. McSweeney dug this fall 91 bush· els of potatoes out of a quarter of an acre lot. But this is not all. After the second hoeing he planted Canadian and horsetooth corn, each of which brought forth a large yield, some of the latter growing eight feet high. On Friday last, Mr. W. T. Dingle exlnbited his Honey Fanning :Mill at the Cartwright Fair, and was again awarded first prize. Another manufacturer of fanning mills, also shown concluded he was going to make a clean sweep of the field, and had arranged for a band and brooms to celebrate his victory over the Honey Mill. However, "he reckoned on hi11 chickens before they were hatched," tmd his mill was so badly beaten by :Mr. D ingle's mill, that he was almost driven off the field. The East Whitby fall fair was held in Oshawa on Wednesday last. The attendance of farmers, manufactures, and people in genernl was very large. The exhibits were excellent in q uality, and for exceeded in numbers tlHl entries of last year. Mr.·Tas. Leask was a large exhibitor of cattle, which would be a credit to any cattle breeder. The persons who won prizes wer~ :-James Leask 1st on one year old Durlmm heifer, bull calf, yearling grade heifer,, and 2nd on draught team, two year old fiilly, two year old heifer, heifer, calf, 12 swede tur· nips and half dozen cabbages. Miss Maggie Leask received 1st on rag mat and 2nd on woolen coverlet. Thos. A. Wilbur 1st on general purpose team. :irirs. Geo. Mitchell 2nd on fiat Berlin wool work. Mrs. Jas. Pollard lst on summer pears. Mrs. T. Bradley, East Whitby, 1st on cretonne work. PORT HOPE CENTRAL FAIR. Ext1·acts from the Times' Report. HORSES. Mr. Jonatlmn Porter, of Oshawa, had a slashing pair of bays by Clarion Chief, on the ground, and which were deservedly given first prize in the carriage cluss. Chas. McNeil sl1owed a fine pair of carriage horses that wern awarded a good second. Mr. Millson's black team of roadsters showed to a great advantage and took first prize. The bay mares shown by Mr. W. W : Dickey, V. S., and Mr. D. Galbraith, of Cl~rke, were splendid specimens of horse-flesh ancl very fast. '.l'hey were each awarded a prize. JERSEY CATTLE. This handsome breed of cows was well represented by the exhibits of Mr. M. Porter, of Bowrnanville. Two pretty little cows and three fawn-like calves, were admired by everyone. The Jerseys are becoming great favorites among b1·eeders of stock, and their numbers a.re increasing rapidly among farmers throughout the Province. SHEEP. Mr. W. B.;Allin, of Newcastle, lmd the call in Leicesters. His exhibits were fine specimens, the ewes especially, and took several prizes. POULTRY. The show in poultry was very credit.'Lble, 'm any of the birds, especially the Leghorns and Houdans, shown by W. J. Wolfe, and the Hamburgs ancl Polands, by Mr. J. M . Hern, were of splendid plumage and build. Mr. A. Hobbs showed a pretty pair of silver-gray Dorkings which took a prize. Mr. W. J . W olfe, of Bowmanville, took first prize for the best lot of poultry. The birds were certainly a very handsome lot, and showed much care in the breeding. The s:tme can be said of the birds shown by Mr. J . M. Hern ; his white-crested black Polands and white Polands being perfect pictures, MISCELLANEO't'S. Mr· Jas. Linton, Orono, exhibited a. market wagon and a two-horse carriage, both of which were of good workmanship :md were generally admired. Mr. J. L. Rowe, Orono, showed a splendid set of single harness, the work being first-class and very neat. The ba.nner screens exhibited by Mrs. W. L. Keys, Bowmanvillo were very handsome.
