Previously an unfavorable malarial condition requiredthe- i ainistr- tion of quinine, ending the oppor- tunity to continue the malaria ther- apy, but the new drug merly a- rests the fever temporarily and pet- cets the patient, after the rest pe- riod, to continue the fever treat- ment. Experiments with the drug, thio- bismol, or bismuth sodium thiogly- colat-e, have been carried on in Cleveland hospitals for several years by Dr. Harold N. Cole, Dr. Gerad A, B -etOro, Dr. James R. Driver and Dr. Herbert H. Johnson Jr. of Cleveland, and Dr. Walter F. Schwartz, now of Pasadena, Calif. According to the paper, a .2-gram injetion of the drug, given intr- venously just before a malaria chill, will ncarly always bring within 6 to 12 hours a test period from the fe- ver, lasting from 24 to 48 hours. 'After the interruption the chills andr-ie of fever return a t the same intervals in which they were occur- ring b-ere the injections," a-cd- ing to the report of the experiments. "Usually the interval is sufficient to allow the patient to resume the cy- cle and continue until he has had the entmer of chills considered neces- sary for treatment of syphilis." Thio-bism l can be used in ordi- nary malaria cases, Dr. DeOre said, but as an adjunct rather than a substitute for quinine. "Many times a patient will have one or- en two additional chills after quinine therapy as been in- stituted to end the course of ma- laria," h-e said. "Most of the time this is not undesirable, but occa- sionally this added chill may be more than the patient can tolrate. To prevent this, thio-bismol is give and quinine started t the same tie, The thi-bismol will elimi- nate- th next chill and by that eme the quinine has become effective."
