Tim Hortons launches charging station in Oakville By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Tim Hortons in Oakville is offering residents a place to charge their electric vehicles as they enjoy a piping hot double-double. The Oakville-based restaurant chain has installed its first electric vehicle charging stations as part of its new pilot project at its 228 Wyecroft Rd. location. The electric charging stations are now available for guest use, free of charge, at the location and for use by Tim Hortons corporate employees at the head office, which is connected to the restaurant. The pilot is an effort to study the technology, its usage and its opportunities. "The electric vehicle infrastructure is in its infancy and we see a potential opportunity for Tim Hortons to help make a true difference by expanding that infrastructure in Canada," said Paulo Ferreira, senior director, International Design and Building Standards, Tim Hortons, in a news release. "At this stage, the goal for us is to explore and understand the technology, to see how it can work at our restaurants and how we can, in turn, support our guests who choose to go electric." Tim Hortons has partnered with Oakville Hydro and the Town of Oakville for this pilot project. "Electric vehicles can potentially have an to the addition of electric vehicles. We are very proud to be part of this project with other Oakville businesses." Tim Hortons is in talks with other municipalities to expand the pilot project before it decides on the future of EV charging stations across its more than 3,300 restaurants across the country. Mayor Rob Burton was pleased Oakville was the first municipality selected for the project. "There is no better place than Oakville for Tim Hortons to launch its electric vehicle charging station pilot project," he said in the release. "Tim Hortons continues to help us make Oakville cleaner and greener, towards realizing our vision of creating Canada's most livable town." Tim Hortons says all future restaurants that will be built will have electrical wires running through conduits in parking lots to simplify a potential installation process. For this pilot, Tim Hortons received support from another Oakville-based company. Ford Motor Company of Canada provided the restaurant chain with its C-MAX Energi Plug-in Hybrid vehicle for testing purposes. 9 · Thursday, February 21, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com PHOTO COURTESY OF TIM HORTONS INC. recharging: A customer at the 228 Wyecroft Rd.
