March of Dimes helps nearly 40,000 Ontarians annually In the March of Dimes Canada's 62nd annual door-to-door fundraising campaign, volunteers made their rounds throughout Oakville in January with the hope of raising $35,000 to help people with physical disabilities. However, the national charity can still use your help. Donations are still being accepted to fund March of Dimes' programs and services, which serve almost 40,000 people annually in communities across Ontario. Many of these people who receive assistance have been waiting months or even years for the programs and services they need, according to the organization. Just some of the things donations support include the March of Dimes' Assistive Devices Program, rehabilitation program and Conductive Education program as well as social opportunities for people with disabilities. Last year alone, according to March of Dimes Canada, donations to its Assistive Devices Program allowed the organization to provide almost 80 devices -- such as manual and motorized wheelchairs -- with a value of more than $91,000 to Oakville residents with disabilities. "Our goal is to raise over $35,000 in Oakville," commented Mary Lynne Stewart, Director of Fund Development and Communications for March of Dimes Canada. "With such a supportive community, I know that everyone will do what they can so we can exceed our goal." This year, the organization has recruited more than 6,000 volunteers to help fundraise. March of Dimes Canada also implemented an online component that allowed canvassers to electronically `walk their block' in support of the campaign.
