Students gave harbour an architectural boost The harbour area around Oakville's 16 Mile Creek received a facelift courtesy of some local students this fall -- metaphorically at least. Grades 11 and 12 students from across the town presented their plans to improve the waterfront as part of On the Brink, an architecture design competition. The competition was organized by the staff at John Willmott Architect Inc., with the goal of helping the community and hopefully inspiring a few young Frank Gehry's. "I've always thought it would be a great thing to help promote architecture and help the students build their portfolio," said John Willmott, principal architect and president at John Willmott Architect Inc. "It's also great to give back to the community and it's a lot of fun." The students were asked to design an outdoor skating rink and surrounding pavilion area. Their park area must also include an area to store a zamboni and preferably be multifaceted enough to use in the summer.
