Vol. 50 No. 151 "Using Communication To Build Better Communities" THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2012 32 pages $1.00 (plus tax) riziero vertolli / oakville BEAVER / @halton_photog walking the line: Halton elementary teachers and early childhood educators staged a one-day strike yesterday (Wednesday). While some Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) Halton teachers protested at Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn's office (seen here), others picketed the Halton District School Board office. Schools were closed for the day, but were expected to re-open today (Thursday). Teachers on picket lines, but not at local schools "We chose MPP sites as opposed to schools because our fight today is against the government and not against our school board," said Al Bero, president of the Halton Elementary Occasional Teachers of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO). Bero was speaking outside of Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn's office, where approximately 500-700 teachers were protesting over both a morning and an afternoon shift. Flynn's office was one of the three picket locations across Halton, along with Halton MPP Ted By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Local public elementary schools were closed yesterday as Halton teachers held a one-day strike in protest of Bill 115 (Putting Students First Act). Nearly 3,000 teachers were out on the picket line in three locations, choosing to picket outside local MPPs' offices, instead of individual schools. Chudleigh's constituency office in Milton and the Halton District School Board's head office, the J.W. Singleton Education Centre, on Guelph Line in Burlington. The board office was chosen over Burlington MPP Jane McKenna's office, said Bero, because McKenna's office is located in the interior of a building. "It's not a good picketing spot. So, we left her site for that reason and went to the school board instead. The school board has good visibility and it's on a busy corner," Bero said.
