MPP (PC-DURHAM WEST) With thoughts quickiy turning to the holiday season, just around the corner, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some suggestions presented by the Addiction Research Foundation, an agency of the Province of Ontario. At this time of year, social acitivities increase and the item which has been associated with visiting and entertaining is the tradition of the "Christmas drink". Our senior persons require tran- sportation for shopping, doctors appointments etc. The office of Community Care could use extra heip at any time. Please cail wi th news items for '81. Merry Christmas to ail - M. McEachern 725-8967 No thanIks, I'm driving But an important consideration for both hosts and guests - and a concern which is echoed by more and more people at this tiine of the year relates to drinking ini moderation. Remember that the heavy drinker at your Christmas party may become the impaired driver when the party is over. As hosts and hostesses, we are often considerate of guests in other ways, but we may not think to offer someting special for the heait.h food fan, the dieter, the non-drmnker or the guest who simply wishes a "party drink" without alcohol because he is driving home after the party. Why Bother? The drnking driver is causing a large number of the ac- cidents on Ontario roads, as a recent Mfimstry of Transpor- tation and Communications report indicated - approximately one hall (54.4% in 1979) of the drivers kiiled in traffic ac- cidents had been drinking. But How Can I Help? Hosts and hostesses can make a major contribution in assisting their guests if they accomodate the guest who says, "A Drink - No Thanks ... I'm Driving". Perhaps the easiest way to encourage this is to serve a variety of food and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) paying particular atten- tion to the manner in which they are served. When You're Having A Party, Consider... Serving high protein snack foods (cheese, nuts, meats) throughout'the evening. Making non-alcoholic beverages appealing and. readiiy available. Welcoming requests from guests for "light drinks". Ending the party with extra food and non-alcoholic drinks to assist the guests in sobering up before they leave. Providing an aiternate method of ensuring that the guests "who has had too much to drink" gets home ... piease don't let him drive. In keeping with Christmas spirit of giving, I would like to share one of the drink recipes from the great entertainers which is recommended by my staff: CRANBERRY NOG (Serves 6) 6 egg yolks 500 ml coid cranberry juice cocktail 125 ml coid milk 3 ml vanilla 6 ice cubes 3 egg whites 50 mi white sugar Ground nutmeg Combine egg yolks, milk, cranberry juice coctail, vanilla and ice cubes in a blender. Blend weli. Beat egg whites until foamny. Add sugar gradualiy, beating constantly, until egg whites are stiff and glossy. Pour cran- berry mixture into an attractive bowl. Foid in egg whites. Sprinkie with nutmeg. Serve immediately. Ih hope that some of these suggestions wil assist in making this a Safe and Happy Holiday Season for you and your family.
