"Negotiations are condlue- ted in an adversary nature and we must do sometbing to solve our problems," he said. "'il be-placing strong empliasis on educational support." Brady, a 43 year old father of five is the personnel of- ficer of Durham College and prior to his ýelection as chairman he served on the board for f ive years. H1e told his fellow trustees that more pressure is being put on Catholie education because of the "permissive society we live in." "I was at a seminar on the weeken (prior to the Iast one) and public sehool sup- porters told me that some of their people were telling un- truths so they could get their children enrolled in our system where morals seem to be a little bit higher." Brady said that "un- truths" meant that people had actually lied about their faith to get their children in- to the separate sebool system. That doesn't help the rest of the country. " During the Ottawa debate on the new Liberal energy policy, this attitude surfaced often. In tbe last election, my opponent spoke of greedy Aibertans. It's an argument I bave little respect for because not only is it misleading, it hurts national unity. The new budget, portrayed as defending Ontario from our greedy fellow Canadians out West, is really hurting Ontario industry and job creation. 1If $8 billion is spent in Aberta on a tar sands plant, $3.4 billion would be spent on Ontario manufacturing. Some estimates go as bigh as $4.4 billion. That's straiglit, right off the top, expenditure. Lt ignores completely tbe multiplier ef- feçt of all that money, whicb would also work to Ontario's ad- vantage. Tbe greater the delay in Alberta oil development, the longer Ontario wallows in unemployment. Another complaint I'm' used to hearing is from auto workers: "Keep the price- of gasoline down. Otberwise, fewer cars will be sold and that means fewer jobs wben gas prices go up. " ,Jhe -opposite is true. With consumers paying the true price of gasoline, the researdch and engineering aspects of the auto industry will flourisb. There'1l be new demand for frugal, ex- tremely efficient cars. Those cars bave to be designed and built. I'd rather Chrysler and General Motors employees had that work than the Japanese. We shouldn't resent Alberta because it bas the good fortune to become wealtby at this point i Canada's bistory. The sooner Aberta ýdevelops its resources, the sooner Alberta can spend money to belp get the Ontario economy on track.
