"The metal fabricatars believe that a "feeder systemn" of new employees ready to be trained and willing to comence work in their industry, would provide the solution to a chronic need for new per- sonnel, " Barks said. After some discussion at a recent meeting, thée DOIT committee -agreed to sup- port the efforts of the metal fabricating companies through the establishment of a sub-committee which woul deal specifically with the development, lobbying and organizational efforts required. A status report on current training in the Durham Region was made by Frank Norris from the appren- ticeship training board of the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. Total training in the In- dustrail Mechanic, Fitter Welder, General Machinist and Tool and Die programs are now 155, up from 74 one year ago. The 155 trainees do not include 60 mould- makers currently on block release programs. A survey in regard to motor vehicle mechanics in the Durham REgion is being planned which will establlsh training needs in this area. There are currently a large number of apprentice motor mechanics who would prefer to take their training here. Therefore, there could be a strong advantage in developing a local program. The next meeting of the DOIT committee is scheduled for December 18, and will be held at the Durham Regional Headquarters at 10 a.m. Any companies interested in participating are most welcome.
