New councéil must deal with man y weight issues Edwards says By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff After a two year absence, Tommy Edwards returned to Whitby Town Councii Monday night having been sworn in as one of Whitby's two regional councillors. Edwards said that lie ap- preciated and agreed with the editorial in last week's edition of (the Whitby Free Press noting that it was good to be remninded of what hap- pens to many municipal politicians. The long-time municipal ---poitician said that there was "no shortage of weighty issues (o be deait with" by the council. Edwards is particuiariy concerned with the lot levy issue that is presentiy before Durham Regionai Council and that he "was disappoin- ted that no explanation was given" at its meeting last week. Edwards, Regionai Coun- cillor Gerry Emm and Mayor Bob Attersley will have to deai with not only the lot ievy issue but the proposed increase in the user rates for water and sewer at a regional council meeting to be called later this month. In order to compensate for the reduction in lot levies, an increase in the water and sewer rates has been recommended. Edwars said that if the lot levy is based on thie costs of installing municipal ser- vices -then why do we go to the Ontario Municipal Board? - At least one developer has said that they wili take the region to the 0MB over their lot levy structure, hoping to reduce it. Edwards aiso told thie crowd of 350 people present at the meeting that he has been told by an officiai of Firestone Canada that their empty plant in Whitby may be sold in the near future. He said he was toid that there are a "number of proposais under con- sideration. " The national represen- tative for the Canadian Union of Public Empioyees aiso said that he hoped that the company wiii recognize the "needs of, this com- munity" and expedite any proposai that would reopen the plant.
