WHITBY FREE PRESS,WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1980, PAGE 19 Letter to the editor . ... Beathsays that the region must not stand still in his farewell letter Dear Sir: I wish to thank you for providing space for the following message to your readers who are residents of the Region of Durham. Since July 1973, It has been my privilege to serve the Council of the Regional Municipality of Durham as Its Chairman. During the time spent In that office, it has been my oppor- tunity and pleasure to do many things. I have been part of-the team that helped restructure local government in this particular part of Ontario that hopefully will serve its residents well today and in the future. I know some of you who read this are fining this change somewhat difficult to understand and accept. I am con- vinced that change had to come because we do not stand still. We elther change and ad- just to growth and technology; or we stagnate, watch poor planning, no planning and lack of conern take the inevitable step of falling behind. I have spent con- siderable time in ex- plaining this. present structure to those who have shown an interest. I have learned a great deal about the different lifestyles and am- bitions of people from differnt vocations and georgraphic areas. I have learned about the dedication of many groups of individuals. I know of the energies put forth by church organizations, school organizations and those who are in- terested in assisting children and adults who for some reason are not able to enjoy all of the things that so many of us take for granted. I have said on many occasions that there are certain services we can legislate; there are other services you can buy; but there are other services provided by some individuals and groups who have a per- sonal interest and desire, and provide a very special type of at- tention that cannot be egislated or brought, but must came f rom the heart. To ail of those volun- teers involved in this type of community work, I say thank-you and ask for your con- tinuing interest. I have had many of- ficial dutires such as conductig meetings, representing Durham on occasions within and beyond our boun- darles, and meeting with people from government, business, industry and even Church, in the interest of Durham and its residents now and in the future. I wish to express to ail of you my sincere thanks for the many kindnesses and cour- tesies extended to me and hope that my ac- tions during this time of service has been ac- ceptable to you. For you as In- dividuals, familles or communities, I wish health, happiness and satisfaction in the days that lie ahead; as I leave having thoroughly enjoyed this unique challenge and opportunity to ser- ve. Sincerely, Walter Beath Regional Chairman Craftsman's Bench 11 Taunton Rd.
