According to a story in the Oshawa Times, Centre Ward Councillor Barry Evans said that council took the action because it "could see the writing on the wall. " However, that same newspaper also claimed that the town is not yet making public a staff report that states that the levies were too high to wlthstand a challenge before the 0MB. Durham Regional Councd Is expected to make aÏ final decision today on a staff recommendation that their lot lévies be reduced by some $590 a unit. To compensate for this ac- tion, another recommen- dation la before reglonal coundil that would see the user rates for water and sewer raised by 27 per cent over the next two years. Should this recommen- dation be approved, the average Durham uiser of water and sewer will see an increase of about $24 in 1981 to bis annual bull of '$141. In 1962 an additional $16 will be charged. Ambulance During the week that en- ded at midnlght last Thur- sdaY the Whltby Ambulance Service responded to 68 cails for service. According to service co- owner Derek Pierce, they responded to 25 catis for a routine nature and to 27 standby cails for other am- bulance services in Ajax and Oshawa. The service also respon- ded to 16 emergency cails, including three motor vehicle accidents.
