MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff The surprise of Monday night's municipal election came when Ross Batten, a political novice, unseated incumbent North Ward Couneillor Bob Carson by over 200 votes.* Batten took an early lead in the polis and let it throughout the evening with Batten eventually receiving 717 votes to Carson's 513. Third place went to Carson 's rival in the 197 election, Rene Thiebaud who only managed to muster some 297 votes. Despite Carson's defeat, two incumbent councillors came out wlth landslide vic- tories over their opponents. In the west ward, Joe Bugelli swept his two; also novice rivials, with 1;602 votes. Angle Littlefied came second with 3QI and Lynd Buffett tralled themn both with 271 votes. Incumbent East Ward Councillor Joe Drumni scored a landslide victory over newcomer Bill Lovelock securing 1,403 votes to the latter's 589. In the centre ward, in- cwnbent Barry Evans hung on to is seat by a comfor- table rnargin winning 926 votes to his closest rivial's 700. Marie Brooks did well in attaining ibis number sin- ce this was her firat try at running for Whitby Town Council. The thrid candidate in the centre ward, Robin Lyon was a poor third achieving only 204 votes.
