A.nd to that endi, the school boards should be en- couraging local Industries to get more involved in high school apprenticeship programs. Stephenson asked that students gathereci in the school's auditorium whether or flot they are prepared to cope with the advent of the computer age adding that it was not sufficient that students reaci about the changes in the job market, they mnust experience them. "The world of work la out there beckoning you," the minister saici. "You wil be working at careers that weren't envisioned 10 and 15 years ago." Stephenson tolci the stud- enta that the country has moveci (rom an agriculturally based economy to an industrial baseci one although she stressed that the agricultural industry is going to need more professionally-trained peo- ple in the future. She also predicted that the need for such trained people as machinlsts will be greater in the near future. "We do have something calleci a critical skills shor- tage," Stephenson saici. The reason for this was- that Canada had iniporteci many skilled people (rom Europe, people who are now beginnlng to retire with no one to replace them.
