Bell stressed that upon finding a downed person it ia important to establish his or ber unresponsiveness first. This ia done. by hyper- extending the neck and checklng to see if the air passage is blocked. Next breathing is checked. The rescuer should put his head down by the victims mouth and watch the chest for any movement. If none la evident he should then listen for any sign of breathlng and finally feel with bis cheek if the person is breathing. If ail 0f these tests prove negative the person should give the victim four quick breatbs. Once this is done the vic- tims pulse should be checked by placing the fingers around the neck and locatlng the victim's cartold artery. Bell said that If no pulse can be found cardlo- resusitation should be star- ted. By applylng pressure with the palm of the hand a few inches Up the sternum (breastbone) t.he resuer can force the heart to resum pumping blood to the body and hopefuily start it again.
