ROYAL BANK The Durham Family Relief Services offers a relief programn for the familles of developmentally handicapped person in this area. The presence of a handicapped person in the home often presentsa great strain. The aim of com- munity based programs is to keep the handicapped in- dividuals out of the in- stitutions with the resuit that parents keeping their family member in the much preferred home environ- ment are subjected to much more pressue. With a nor- mal child or aduit, relatives and friends can take care of hîm or her to give the famnilies a break. Howev,%er, with a developmeii.ally handicapped or multiply handicapped person this is not always possible. The Durham Region Associations for the Men- t.ally Retarded have designed and are offering a relief programn that has been providing a relief service-to these families. These relief parents have completeci a training course at Durham Colleý,e and have volunteer ex perience with the handicUP- ped. The course is a ten week, night school course entitled "The Supervision and Management of the Child with Special Needs". The course covers such areas as first aid, play and stimulation, growth and development, as well as behaviour management. The topics are presented by a series of guest speakers who work in the varlous f ields. - It is an accaredited course at Durham College with a cost of $26. People who take the course are un- der no obligation to become relief parents, many take it for their own interest.
