A\tl..'US27,P80IS, PAGL 5 Check chilren for lice before sehool opens Tues day As the beginnlng of the school year approaches, the Durham Region Health Unit 15 sending out a warning to ail parents to check their children for pediculosis or head lice. According to E. A. Schaefer, the director of public health nursing ser- vices for the unit, said in a written statement that in the 1g79-1980 school year ap- proximately 600 children were excluded from sehool because of head lice. During the year, some 500 ciassrooms and 2,000 in- dividuals were checked for the infestation. Schaefer said that parents should inspect their children'S HEADS FREQUENTLY. 'We wouid ask that they begin before the children return to schooi on Septem- ber 2nd,' she said adding that 'If they are suspicious that head lice are present, would they notify their local Durham Regional Heaith Unit off ice.' The health officiai stressed that parents not aiiow their children to wear other children's headgear, especially those headgears used in sporting activities. Schaefer also said that if 'a child is excluded from school because of head lice, he or she may not return un- tii ail the nits (eggs) are removed from his or her hair and they should not return to their classroom un- YMCA holds play school Playschool, a pre-school program for children ages two to five years will be held at the Brooklin Community Centre on Cassels Road East from Monday to Thursday, 9:3tol11:30 a.m., beginning on September 2. Pediculosis is transmitted by contact with an infected person or by contact with his personal belongings, especialiy bis clothing and headgear, (inciuding combs and brushes). The eggs of the head bouse will hatch in a week, under the best conditions, and wilI reach sexual maturity in about two weeks. As long as the lice remains alive and until the eggs have been destroyed, the in- festation is communicable. The unit says that the head bouse is a grayish, somewhat oval insect, about one-sixth of an inch in length and has six legs. It lives on the head of the victim and uses blood for food. The eggs are a whitish color, also oval shaped and are glued to the hair. Should pediculosis be found, the health unit says that it can be treated through products that are for sale at most drug stores. They also advise that the in- structions be followed closely and that if more help is needed, parents should contact their family doctor. It has also been suggested that the environment in wbich the chiid lives be con- troled. The heaith unit says that piilows, mattresses, collars. and hats be vacutumed-, thoroughiy. Ail bedding ind clothing shouid be washed thoroughly. Other members of the famiiy, including those that do not go to school, should be checked to make certain that they are infected, if they are, treatment shouid begin immediately. Each member of the family should have their own brush and comb. During the last school year, Schaefer said that the unit spent 163 working days dealing with this problem. "If one considers the cost factor in nursing timne and equipment, and the ioss of timne from school of the 600 children invoived (the average loss per student being minimally two days) this is a very expensive problem, " Schafer sa id. Any parent needing more information on pediculosis or suspecting that their children may be infected is encouraged to cail the heaith unit at 723-8521.
