GREENAWAY Free Press Staff Stuclents from surroun- ding unîversities, com- rnunity colleges and high sehools are spending the summer working at the Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital and ioving it. Experience '80, a projeet started eight years ago by the Youth Secretariat, ern- ploys students to serve as social workers in the provin- ces psychiatric hospitals. The students fromn univer- sities and community colleges started to work in May of this year while high school students didn't start until June 16. Set schedules are prepared on a weekly for- mat giving the students an opportunity to work in three different departrnents a day, said Grey. There were no preretýuisates for the students except for an overail interest in the program. Fitness fits in. 'jý "They're going to get alot of experience out of this summer."e The work week begins on Mondays at 8 a.m. going un- tii 4:30 p.m. through Friday while a second shift begins at 12:30 p.m. and runs until 9:30. "Speakers give taiks on a variety of different subjects which provides a good way for thern to learn, " said Grey. Every second Friday the students hoid a speciai event which could range anywhere from a car wash to the up- corning carmival. "I1 put rny application in the day I finished last year. "lYou realiy feel like you're doing sornething over there, and yoy tend to over- corne alot of your fears about growing oid. " The students tended to agree that working in .the hospitai was a beneficiai ex- perience, both in a field reiated and personai capacity. III now have a totaiiy dif- ferent outiook of the hospitai," said Lisa Batt, a hurn kenetics student at Guelph.
