Action packed weekend of basebal Area basebaîl fans will have an action packed weekend coming Up July 12 and 13 when some of the top midget clubs in Ontario con- verge on Whitby and Oshawa to play in the ninth annual tournament co- sponsored by the Whitby Minor Basebail Assoc. and the Oshawa Legion Basebail Team goes ail o ut CONT D FROM PG. 22 certain amount of bad luck especially when the bail hit a goal post and the crossbar on two separate occassions. Whitby nevertheless won the contest on a goal by its cen- tre forward, David Uden. Dean Mizen registered lis first shut-out of the season. Next the Anthony's Dining Lounge team played the Oshawa Soccer Club: the latter dominated the play during the first haîf going ahead by two goals. Whitby played more aggressively during the second part of the match and its efforts were rewarded wlien the newest addition to the tearn, Kevin Lee Sui, saw his admirable persistance throughout the game, rewarded wit.h a well deserved goal. This partial success con- tributed in enlivening even more each member of the teain: they went ail out in their attaempt to even the score but the Oshawa teain was able not only to contain their continued attackes but also to surprise the Whitby defense once more, making the final score 3 to 1 in favour 0f the visitors . This setback did not seem to discourage the Major Atoin teain too much for they won their next league gaine against Pickering Village by a resounding 5 to 2. The Whitby teamn led by f ive golas minutes from the end with Kevin Lee Sui and Mark O'Dell scoring twice eadh and David Uden adding one. The Pickering squad saved the day with J. Long who scored twice, including a penalty kick awarded to his teamn on a debatable cal Assoc. Since the first event in 1972, the tourney lias quickly become established as one of the most prestigious in the province and each year many clubs are turned away, with the sixteen clubs which gain acceptance feeling fortunate to have gaine a coveted spot in the affair. Midget is the youngest age group at which professional scouts give a serious look at any promising prospects, and each year several representatives from major league clubs are in atten- dance for a look at any promising hopefuls who miglit show enougli talent to warrent further watching. Twenty-three games will be played to declare a tour- nament champion and four parks will be used for gaines beginning on Saturday when action gets underway at 9:30 with games at Kinsmen Stadium in Oshawa and at Peel, Iroquois and Fairman Parks in Whitby. Games at these parks will continue throughout the day with scheduled starts at 12:15, 3:00 and 5:45 p.m. With Saturday's action reducing the field to eight teams, play resurnes on Sunday at 9:30 with gaines at Kinsmen and Iroquois, and games in the same parks at 11: 45. The remaining four clubs in contention will square off at 2:30 at Kinsmen and Iroquois in the senii-final round with the winners meeting at 7:00 p.m. for the Torunament Championship. The fiani game alternates bet'ween Whitby and Oshawa with this year's final at Kin- smen Stadium. Winners in previous years have been Scarborougli Village, Hamilton Malioney Bears, Scarborougli Bircli- mount, South Windsor, Belleville, East York, Niagara Falls N.Y. and Welland. There have been many memorable highliglits over the years, but the '78 final between Brantford and Niagara Falls N.Y. ranks as one of the most exciting basebaîl games played in the area in any league or classification in many years. It was not decided until the last out in the bottom of the ninth when Niagara Falls won 4-3 and it was also notable because the Bran- tford pitcher was Wayne Gretsky who lias gone onto fame and fortune in the hockey wars. Whitby and Oshawa of- ficiais are hopeful that the bad weather whlch seems to have plagued the even almost every year will go elsewhere for a change this weeken. Even thougli torrential downpours have brought action to a hait on many occasions, there lias neyer been a cancelled game and tournament organizers are hoping to keep the rètord of always completing the tournament, inttrct for another year. Clubs entered this year are Barrie, York, Hamilton Mahoney Bears, Scar- borougli Birclimount, Gran- dravine, Bloordale, High Park, Hamilton Calquhoun, Wheatley, Ajax, Oakville, Scarborougli Village, Huron East (London), Niagara Falls (Ont.) and the host clubs Oshawa and whitby. Sum mer tennis is their racket Sheldon Ginn, 13, of Westiand Public School takes on tennis instructor Cathy Platt for a round of wall tennis during lessons being tauglit at Iroquois Park. The lessons are part of a three prograin camp being put on at Iroquois Park during the summer.
