At every clinic, a small percentage of poten- iai donors are emporarily deferred for some minor health reason. A blood donor must be from 18 to 65 years of age. A 17 year old may give, with written parental consent. Good health is important. The population of Whitby is about 30,000. If you were to subtract the nuniber of person over 66 and under 17 and those who are medically prevented from giving blood, there would still be 17,000 or 18,000 eligible blood donors. Everyone knows that when you receive blood, it lias been freely donated. A hip operation requires many units of blood. A haemophuliac functions normally because of the daily injection of cryoprecipates from several blood donors. Unfor- tunately, not everyone con- siders it a personal respon- sibility to donate blood. An hour of your time, once every three months, is very little, wlien saving a live is the resuit. In Canada, tlie Red Cross operates Blood Donor Clinics and keaeps nation- wide computer records, so thaL blood, freely given, is available free of charge to any needy recipient. The Blood Bank in Toronto, where Whitby's blood is processed, serves 75 hospitals, and needs 2300 units of blodd on hand at al imes to most effectively serve the needs of a large area. In summer, the need goes on, but donations sometimes faîl off, because' of vacations. Mak e a real ef- fort to attend the June 25 clinie at the Whitby Legion Hall. If that isimpossible, there will be a public clinic in the Recreation Hall at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital for staff and townspeople, Monday afternoon, JuIy 21. Current posters state, '"A Summer Blood Donor is a Rare Bird ... Be One." 134th ANNIVERSARY St. John's Anglican Church, Whitby will be celebrating their 134th an- niversary on June 22 at 3 P.m.
