Hobbs to return to Idia with measies vaccine By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Whitby's Rotary Club will again be sending Dr. Ken Hobbs to India to fight red measies. At a luncheon last week, officiais of the Rotary Club announced the project as part of their 75th anniver- sary celebrations. Hobbs, went to India last September with 70,000 measie vaccine shots in the pilot projeet. This time he will with 3½/million shots at an estimated- cost of Mw5000. This projeet will be paid for jointly by Canada Rotary and the federal government. Hobbs will go to Rotary Distirct 707 is Southern India where there is an estimated seven million children. This project is one of only ½/three that were given san- ction by the club's governing body, Rotary International. According to Hobbs,* 18,000 children in the area die each year from red measles. These children are usually between one and five years of age. this Rotary district lies in southern India encom- passing 6,000 square miles with a population of 50 million. According to Hobbs, red j, measles is India's prime killer under the age of five. " Hobbs said that if a Indian family have 10 children, as many as six will die before their fifth birth- day and at least three of them will have succumbed to red measles. The former Whitby town councillor also said that the project will aid in the promotion of family programing in one of the British Commonwealth½'s most underdeveloped coun- tries. "Eliminating the infant mortality rate is the first step towards family plan- ning, " Hobbs said. According to R. Varaclaraj, governor of the Indian Rotary district, "the measles program bas made a tremendous impact in my part of the district." He said that his organization experienced a lot of resistance fromn local doctors and from the public during the early period of the projeet although he is now confident that it bas since faded away. Varadaraj also said that the Indian government is slowly getting more heavily into health care but has been concentrating on other diseases such as diptherea and whooping cough. Hobbs is scheduled to go to India in September where besides running the program he has also planned to meet with various gover- nment officials. Over the last two or three decades, the average life span of an Indian mnan has risen fromn 27 to 54. This compares to 69 for the average canadian maie.
