On Saturday February 2 during the Jaycee week prorm, members of the Whitby Jaycees braved the cold to conduct a survey of cars parked in plazas around town. Three hundred cars were checked in Dominion, Sa!eway, Miracle Mart, and Woolco Plazas. It was determined that 40 % of cars were left unlocked, 3% of themn had the keys left in the vehicle, and 1% were le! t running. Such carelessness is an open invitation to professional car thieves, car strippers, or just plain joy riders. The only way to make the invitation more blatent would have been to put a sign on the windshield saying 'Steal Me', a spokesmnan for the club said. "lIt only takes a matter o! a couple of minutes for a thief to start an unlocked car, and it is a proven fact that thieves go after the unlocked vehicle irst", he saîd. Beyond that, it only takes a rmatter of a minute to remove such items as C.B. radios, and only seconds to pick up loose items lef t in your vehicle. " Perhaps worst of all is the "'Joy Rider". Rardiy a week goes by wthout hearing of a Young person seeing keys in a car and deciding to succumb to the teinptation that some uncaring person has placed in froet of thern.
