PAGE 12, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1980, WHITBY FREE PRESS Store beiing ivestigate o a d The Müistry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs (Canada) la investtgating a complaint that customers are belng misled by adver- tlsing inside a Whitby store, according te a Toronto Star story. The story, that appeared on February 4, said that several custemners had corn- plained that orders at the Arthur Treacher Fish and Chip outlet at 1111 Dundas Street East did not contain ail the items shown in pic- tures above the service counter. According to the Star, Brain and Ann Dorrepaal of Bowmanvile demanded that ail the items displayed in the pictures be included in their meals, however, the store's assistant manager, Diane Pillar, insisted that the couple pay an extra 29 cents for an order of coleslaw. "It's just another con- sumier rip-off ,"y Mrs. Dorrepaal told the Star's Stan Josey. "People corne in and look at the pictures and they order a meal based on those pictures. " The Toronot district manager for the ministry, Susan Cochrane, said that the complaint will be in- vestigated. According to the Star, the complaints revolve around at least two dishes in the outlet's menu. The $2.99 shrimp and fish dinner has a picture that shows a piece of fish, three shrimp, french fries, cole slaw, seafood sauce, hush- puppies (the chain's onion halls) and a sprig of parsley. When served, the meal contained only the fish, the shriîrip and the french fries. A dish named "original fish and chips" and the seafood plater were also served without the pictured condiments. According to the story, Pillar told customers that the pictures are just that, pictures, and are not meant to show everything included in the meals. "'There is a rope in the pic- ture too, and we sure don't serve rope with our meals," she told the Star. AgROYAL BAN K< 307 Broek St. Se Whitby 668-9358 Ontario recently admitted to the Star that "the menu boards are slightly mlsleading" and that he dlaims personal respon- sibulity. "We got locked into the pictures on the story boards when they came fromn our U.S. parent company," Lip. ton sa id. To produce new pictures, without the extras, would cost about $2,000 a store and Lipton said that he can't af- ford it. To help customners under- stand the confusion, he told the Star that he ordered an explanation strip added to the pictures. It read: "Picture, plus hushpuppies and condimen- ts."1 Lipton told Josey that he thought this would tell people that tahe picture was just a picture and the hush- puppies and the condiments cost extra. Since this was done two weeks ago, Lipton said that he will again change the ex- planation strips to make it clear that the hushpuppies and the coleslaw are extra - 29 cents for three hushpup- pies or one small container of coleslaw. "lLet's face iL, the last thing 1 want is there to be any confusion surrounding this thing," Lipton is repor- ted to have said. He also indicated that both hushpuppies and coleslaw were offered free with meals when the new stores were opened, but that they became a la carte items when it was discovered that they were eating away his profits. Lipton said that "if worst cornes to worst and the pic- tures should have to be changed to clear this up, then 1 guess l'Il have to change the pictures. To privatize the rnoney-making parts of PetroCan is to abandon our energy future to the multinationals." "IWhy should we, the tax- payers of Canada, cough up exploration grants to Exxon and the like," Rison con- tînued, "When our money goes directly into their pockets.
