The statement was made by Newcastle Councillor Bill Clarke after regional council received Oie annual report froni Oie home's physician. (No regional councillor from Whitby sit.s on Oie social services committee as Bob Attersley sits on public works, Gerry Emni on finance and Mayor Jim Gar- tshore on Oie management committee of which he is vice-chairman.) "But in the intervening 30 year-s," he said, "we have alos become Oie oldest and Oie most decrepit. The factt that our engineer could not maintain proper room tem- peratures because of old piping that was clogged and Oie boiter inadequate was considered an understan- dable nuisance. " Grant said that the fact Oiat the hospital wing rooms did noi have sufficient space for dividers or for individual commode storage was born almost cheerfully until the outbreak of salmonella poisoni:ng last year. "Froni that first week of July until the ail clear was sounded on the 23rd of Novemnber a melodrama with heroes and villians was enacted in these walls,"' he said. "The vilians were the outdated facilities which ap- peared to be designed to th- wart attempt.s at isolation, Oie seemingly endless delay up to two weeks in obtaining culture resuits from public health laboratories and the very real worry of having adequate staff left to look af- ter our sick patients. " Grant said that contingen- cy plans went well and praised nursing director and her staff for working a seven day week and deferring their normal holidays. He did, however, have a request to make of Oie social services committee and the regional council. "I would request that the Committee of Management (Oie social services commit- tee) seek funding for Oie replacement or modemn upgradling of our hospital wing facility, " he said. "lWe owe this to Oie residents entrusted to our care."t The chairman of Oie social services committee, Coun- cillor John DeHart of Oshawa said that he agrees that Oie home could use Oie improvements. " DeHart said that a com- plete and proper renovation of Oie home would cost about $1.25 million. However, he saîd that lie would like to expand Oie facility to accommodate another 50 beds but that would cost $2.5 million. DeHart also added that it is "a case of priorities" pointing out that Oie region bas a waiting list of 400 people wanting to be admit- ted to ahome for the aged.. To Oiat end, DeHart lias been fighting to have another home for Oie aged built in Newcastle and said that he wil be seeing both Ontario Health Minister Dennis Timbreil and Treasurer Frank Miler to ask for provincial funding. DeH-art said that he lias the "facts and proof to back Up" a request for an ad- ditional facility. Despite its current trouble, DeHart had nothing but praise for Fairview ad- ministrator Murial Coates and her staff and described the home's care as "second- to-none. " "After ail," he said, 'Iany place 30 years old could use some improvements."' Two years to complete WPH proj ect It will take about two years to complete the redevelpment of Oie Wbitby Psychiatrie Hospital, Durham West MPP George Ashe told a special meeting of Whitby Council last week. Ashe said that Oie project should start in 1983 and be completed in 1985. He said Oiat while be had no information concerning specific plans for Oie new faciity, Oiey. should be known when a report being prepared by a local commit- tee is submitted to Health Mlnister Dennis Timbrell sometime in June.
