Rison also said that "4we 're playing polîtics by griping about different En- vironmental Assessment Board dates. "It's irrelevant to argue about delaying mhe liquid waste hearings, " he saîd. "The proposaI has to be stopped, now. " Rison also said mhat it was pointless to "haggle about hearing dates and federal government represen- ta tion. "' "The federal government is already involved because it fronted mhe money for the engineering study, " he sa id. Rison said he believed that Seo Our Large Varietyv of Gif t Fragrances For Hm - And Mer! mhe people want to know; "how likely it is that Ajax will suffer a mass evacuation;" "how likely is it mhat mhe local residents may end up holding the bag if a cleanup is necessary; " and "what written guaran- tees will there be to avoid mhe latter." Rison said that the greater threat is from on-site spillage ramher mhan the trucking of tme waste, and quoted a report that cited mhe possibility of on-site spillage as 60 times greater mhan truck spilis. "Obviously,"he said, "the greater threat is on mhe site - les'mhan 3,200 feet from the nearest home. Yet the ex- perts who assembled the report only address them- selves to truck spilis. They are ominously silent regar- ding site leaks. " Rison said that the only way to stop mhe proposal is to find a more attractive site and to lobby Ontario En- vironment Mimster Harry Parrott. "The trouble with that is the false logic behind building a liquid treatment plant," he said. "The politicians and the experts both justify this proposai but intimating it'll stop illegal dumping. They tell us we have to take a responsible position, by operating a treatment plant in an urban area."t He said that the only way to guarantee full use of any waste treatment facility to increase the penalties for illegal dumping. "The way things stand now, it will be cheaper to durnp illegally and pay the fine than to pay for treat- ment of the waste," he said. "At the moment the Most niggling question seems to be where does the buck Your Choice- $2 39 E OnIy' stop?"' Bison said that if an ac- cident should occur at a con- verted plant, the cleanup will be paid for by the tax- payers of tme region, the province and probably teh country as weil. Rison added mhat treat- ment coutracts must involve shared-cost clauses. "Let the industries that generate the waste pay part of the cleanup costs," he said. "This country needs widescale industrial recycling encouraged by in- centives from the federal government. "After ahl, one firm's waste is another's raw material," he said. Rison charged that the en- viornmental assessment board hearings were " arranged to cool down the opposition" and said once " 454g BLACK MAGIC " 454g POT OF GOLO " 397g TURTLES AFTER EIGHT 13 Chocolate Covered Mints 200g*l3 Prices Effective Until Feb. 16. e Rogisl.<ud Trad.nark of Oîug Tîadîng CO Lld DU( TO SPACE uMJATOti$AND A^ltSJltly TW I IO f SALE It(MS S>40WW MAY NOT AU Of AVAILA^&LE ^lAitU OCATIONS COURTICE ALLIN PHARMACY 117 Brock St. N.
