JANIJARY 23.,19801, PAGE 3 to help ACT By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff The controversy over a Durham Region proposai to build a liquid industrial treatment plant in Ajax is drawing in at least one can- didate in the February 18 federal election. Liberal candidate Doug Dickerson commended a group of people known as the Ajax Citizens Together (ACT) in their efforts to gain the necessary legal and en- vironmental expertise to get the project reconsidered. Dickerson was present at t public meeting held by ACT to express their concerns last week. "Speaking not only as the federal Liberal candidate in the Ontario riding but also as a Durharn Regional Councillor, I must admit that I was moved by the sincerity shown," Diekerson said. "I have corne away from that meeting feeling that the citizens, due to insufficient financial funding, will not have the opportunity to retain the necessary legal and environmental exper- ts.,, Dickerson is a regional councillor fromn Pickering and is a nembers of the Public Works committee, the committee responsible for the project. Dickerson said that the ACT group lias the right to be represented at the up- coming hearing 'into the project with the same level of expertise as the proponen- ts of the plan. The proposed liquid in- dustrial waste treatment plant will be designed to serve rnost of the region if it is approved. Dickerson announced at a press conference recently a proposaI that he believes will assist ACT. He proposed that "mat- ching funds, on a dollar-to- dollar basis, be made available by the Regional MunicipaIity of Durham to ACT. " He added that the region's contribution should be limnited to $10.000 giving a total of $20,000 to the group to retain professional assistance.
