PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1980. WHITBY FREE PRESS Elmer the Safety Elephant to visit Whitby January 23 Each month, some On- tario children die in traffic accidents and many others are injured. Accidents can often be avoided when the children understand the basics of road safety. To help them do so, BP Canada and the On- tario Safety League send the BP Road Safety Team to visit schools and other places where children congregate. The team puts on safety shows in which the youngsters participate. Using scaled-down equipment, including pedal- driven vehicles, street signs and traffic lights, the team sets up a series of sketches in which children in the 5-to- 9 age group play different roles illustrating road safety rules. Elmer the Safety Elephant, accompanied by Jocelyne Dougherty and Suzanne Plante, bilingual Montrealers, will visit Whit- by on January 23. the show will be held at Earl A. "We got defeated for the same reason we were elec- ted," Fennell said adding that "I don't trust Pierre Trudeau" claiming that his previous election promises of no gas tax and no wage and price controls held no water after his return to of- fice. Fennell said that Trudeau was the man to beat and told his cheering audience that the campaign should get rid of him. "This time I'm going to appeal to you all," he said, "let's go out there and bury Trudeau once and for all." Fennell also went on to state his accomplishments during his short tenure but specifically pointed to the airport site. He said that the Conser- vatives had made excellent progress with the airport plan and said that the Con- servative government said it won't be needed until the year 2000. Fennell is confident that he will be returned after the February 18 election results are in. "I look forward to going back to Ottawa on February 19." By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff An applauding, en- thusiastic crowd of ap- proximately 400 people ac- claimed incumbent rookie MP Scott Fennell as the Candidate of the Progressive Conservative Party in Ontario Riding. As soon as the nomination was made Fennell wasted no time in launching an all-out attack on the Liberals and the New Democrats im- plying that they were irresponsible to bring down the government after only seven months of office. "I believe we've done a good job up til now," Fennell told his audience. "I've tried hard." Fennell defended Tory Prime Minister Joe Clark saying that "this man will become the greatest Prime Minister this country has ever seen."
