RIDE kicks off Dec. 4 The Halton Regional Police Service will kick off this year's holiday RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign Dec. 4, with help from the students of Thomas A. Blakelock High School. Officers will visit the Rebecca Street high school where they will team up with students to distribute RIDE 101 educational information, which outlines the importance of driving responsibly and the devastating consequences of impaired driving. Students at the school will also have an opportunity to test roadside screening devices and go through a series of simulated `roadside' sobriety tests. During the evening, members of the student council will assist designated officers in speaking with drivers of stopped vehicles during a RIDE spot check. Students will distribute `Think of Me' cards and information pamphlets on impaired driving. United Way halfway to $4.2M While the United Way Oakville (UWO) campaign is nearly halfway to its $4.2 million goal, it still needs an added push before its January deadline. "Oakville is a very generous community, so I am hopeful we will be able to bridge the gap and raise the $4.2 million that is needed in this community," Chris Stoate, UWO campaign cabinet chair, said in a news release. "We have a long way to go, but together, I know we can make it." To date, UWO has raised 46 per cent of its goal. With many company campaigns yet to wrap up, UWO is pushing for new leadership donations and promoting its Dinner for Two Anywhere in the World raffle. Each year, the organization helps more than 30,000 people in Oakville by funding more than 30 community agencies that help children, moving people GIVE. BELIEVE. INSPIRE. from poverty, and build healthy, strong communities. The smallest donations can go towards helping Oakville's communities at large. According to the release, through UWO: · $25 will provide two children with a nutritious breakfast, lunch or snack at their school · $50 will provide a therapy dog to visit 20 people in hospitals, special needs programs or longterm facilities to help individuals recover faster from surgery and reduce feelings of depression · $150 will provide one senior suffering from dementia and other illnesses with therapeutic programs · $300 will provide 26 people suffering from depression, LIVE UNITED attempted suicide, loneliness and other issues with support through a telephone crisis line · $1000 will provide a senior with home delivery of hot lunches and/or frozen meals planned by a dietician for a year "To those donors who have already given, we would like to say thank you," stated Brad Park, UWO CEO.
