Food for Life began with Oakville resident George Bagaco in 1995. He would stop at a bakery on his way home from work and fill his trunk with baked goods, which he'd distribute to needy families in his neighbourhood. "No man, woman or child should have to go hungry while stores, restaurants and other food suppliers are tossing out good food into our landfill," Bagaco was quoted as saying. Over time, Food for Life has grown with help from local Rotary clubs and Kerr Street Ministries. It was incorporated in 2003. Today, it operates seven days a week and picks up surplus and near due date foods at grocery stores and restaurants. It then delivers it to nearly 50 social service agencies and more than two dozen outreach programs. Many of those outreach programs have been established at or, thanks to local churches, near housing co-ops. Deliveries are made throughout Halton, Hamilton and Mississauga.
