The club officially announced Varian's resignation yesterday (Wednesday), though the 39-year-old Ireland native will remain in his role until January 2013. Varian said his motivation for leaving the OSC is to pursue a career in consulting to the sport and recreation sector. "It was an extremely difficult decision for me. I came into the club having a huge amount of respect for it, and in the time I've been here I think my respect and admiration for the club has grown. Not only for how it acts as a club, but also the people who work here and volunteer here," Varian said. "There is no external desire Paul Varian to leave. This is just a time I feel is right to pursue this career opportunity. There are a lot of exciting things starting to happen in Ontario and Canadian soccer. I'm feeling my skills are hopefully going to be needed and applied there as well." Varian said the current state of the OSC was also a factor in his decision. Since Varian joined the OSC in June 2010, registration has increased by more than 33 per cent. The club also implemented a five-year strategic plan, introduced a new technical plan, "The work to put the restructured its OSC on a platform it youth development needs to be on to programs, grew its continue to be referee base and successful has been developed a strong professional coachachieved at this point. ing staff during his I'm driven by helping tenure. other organizations that "The work to put need that type of work." the OSC on a platform it needs to be Outgoing Oakville Soccer on to continue to be Club chief administrative successful has been officer Paul Varian achieved at this point," Varian said. Locals influential in deciding OUA soccer final four Local residents had a big say in determining who would face Sir Wilfrid Laurier in this year's Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's soccer final four. Oakville Trafalgar grad Emma Mangialardi scored the decisive goal in a shootout to lift McMaster to a 1-0 win over the Western Mustangs Saturday in London, sending the Marauders to the championship tournament. Former White Oaks student Mel Emma Mangialardi Van Der Hoop also scored in the shoot-out for the Marauders, who made good on three of their five attempts. Tori Edgar, who backstopped the Holy Trinity Titans to provincial high school gold last summer, took the loss in net for UNIVERSITYSPORTS Western despite holding the Marauders off the scoreboard through regulation and overtime. White Oaks grad Samantha McLaren is also part of the Marauders' squad that will take on the Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday in the OUA Final Four in Ottawa. Queen's and the host Ottawa Gee Gees will also compete in the tournament. Spice top rookie in field hockey Oakville Trafalgar grad Danielle Spice has been named this year's top rookie in the Shiels Division of Ontario University Athletics women's rugby. The fly half helped the University of Western Ontario post its best record since 2009. The Mustangs reached the league's quarter-finals, where Spice scored the Mustangs' only try in a 24-7 loss to Waterloo. Uremovich homecoming queen Loyola grad Angelika Uremovich was crowned homecoming queen during halftime of the University of Louisville's recent NCAA football game against the University of South Florida. Uremovich is a three-year starter for Louisville's women's soccer Angelika Uremovich team. The junior midfielder has 18 career goals with the Cardinals and ranked third on the team in goals (nine) this year going into last weekend's Big East conference tournament. The sports adminstration major is also excelling in the classrooms, twice being named to the Dean's List.
