The Abbey Park High School student completed the senior girls' five-kilometre run in a time of 20:28.19, edging out Loyola challenger Bridget O'Neill by 6.41 seconds. Guay won the GHAC midget title in 2010 and was the junior girls' champion last year. The Grade 11 student excels at shorter distances as well, claiming the junior girls' 800m gold at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) trackand-field championships last spring. Three other Oakville runners were division champions at the GHAC event, which determines qualifiers for the OFSAA championships. Loyola's Kristin O'Neill posted a time of 11:25.62 to win the midget girls' 3km by more than 13 seconds; Hawks teammate Liam Murphy edged out fellow Loyola runner Jaydon Wiggins by 2.68 seconds to win the midget boys' 5km; and T.A. Blakelock's Emily Ramier claimed the junior girls' 4km with a clocking of 19:26.30. Oakville Trafalgar earned a pair of team titles, winning the midget boys' and senior boys' crowns. Scores are tabulated by adding the finishing placings of each school's top four runners, with the lowest score winning. Loyola enjoyed a strong showing in team competition as well, winning the junior girls' title and finishing second in the midget girls', midget boys' and senior girls' events. Blakelock also won a team championship, earning the junior boys' crown, and was second in the junior girls' division. The top four finishers in each division, as well as the top two teams, qualified for this Saturday's OFSAA championship meet in Brampton. Hawks flying high as playoffs begin By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Coming off a disappointing showing in a tournament last weekend, the Loyola Hawks wanted to get back on track while also further solidifying themselves as the best senior girls' basketball high school team in Halton. Loyola accomplished both of those goals Monday at Holy Trinity, downing the previously undefeated Titans 65-38 to finish the regular season with an 11-0 record. The Hawks scored eight of the game's first 10 points, built a 20-7 lead after a quarter and swelled that advantage to 39-18 by halftime. "It was a game the girls have been excited about all season," said Hawks coach Tina De Carvalho. "Abbey Park and Holy Trinity have been the next-best teams in the league, so when we get an opportunity to play them, we get excited... The girls really wanted to prove to everybody that we are the best team in Halton." Of course, it's unlikely that anyone was questioning Loyola's ability to win a second straight regional championship before Monday's game anyway. All of the Hawks' wins this year in league play have come by 23 points or more, and they've given the defending provincial champion St. Thomas More Knights all they could handle in two tournament meetings, losing by two points and by six. De Carvalho's biggest challenge these days might be ensuring her players don't get caught looking ahead when the Halton playoffs begin tomorrow (Thursday). "We're the team to beat," said De Carvalho. "But now teams will come up against us with nothing to lose. That hope and that passion to be the underdog and grab a win can be dangerous in certain hands. Being the undefeated team going into playoffs, you have to stay composed but not be over-confident." Staying healthy and avoiding foul trouble are other See Trinity, page 20 BATTLE OF UNBEATENS: Holy Trinity's Kristen Wadey (in white) is closely guarded by the Loyola Hawks' Sarah Traynor Monday at Trinity.
