www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 19, 2012 · 16 Jane Goodall's eco-message inspires Blakelock student to do more By Madeline Turriff Grade 12, T.A. Blakelock H.S. ravelling 300 days a year, Dr. Jane Goodall spreads her message to people all around the globe. A message that, "Every single day you live, you make a difference, you impact the world." I was one of the lucky few that had the privilege to see her live at the Burlington Arts Centre a few weeks ago, and it was an experience I will never forget. After decades of work in Tanzania's Gombe Stream National Park, her inter- T est gradually shifted from making observations of chimps in the jungle to using that knowledge to help the world. She established "Wildlife Awareness Weeks" around the world to boost local economies and aid conservation by providing jobs. She also formed a group called "Roots and Shoots" to teach children around the world to respect all living things. She also holds lectures about conservation. Calling it her second home, Gombe Park is located off the shore of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. Goodall has been studying chimpanzees since 1960, and her research has changed the way we look at man. At the seminar, there were people wearing T-shirts that read, "I am 98% chimp," because we now know chimpanzees are very similar to humans in that they use tools to hunt for food, feel and express emotions such as grief, anger and joy, and a characteristic laugh. But Goodall also had a more press- ing matter than her adventures to discuss -- it was about us. North Americans like their beef, and their paper, which is why the forests of Goodall's beloved chimps are being cut down. It is also why she left her second home to travel the world and spread her message. Goodall says today's youth are the ones who have to clean up the mess, and as a member of T.A. Blakelock's EcoSchools, I've heard this many times before. I know that I've got to do something, anything, if I don't want the story of The Lorax to become our reality. Goodall is almost magical in the way she speaks, as she knew exactly how I felt, and she says there are thousands of other teens out there that feel the same. Goodall says we shouldn't feel bad about the state of the earth; we should feel hopeful, because every little thing we do can make a difference. This is why she started her " Roots to Shoots" program, which brings like-minded youths together to work on environmental projects around the globe. Goodall has made a huge impact on thousands of humans and chimpanzees alike. And she's just one person. Imagine what we can do together.
