BySteve Leahy The Ministry of< Transportation !s proposing to extend the six- or eight- lane Hlighway 407 to Greenwood in the very near future. The 407 is to ho at Hîghway 48 in Markhaxn in 1998. The rinistry will hold a meeting to inform the public on Thur8day, Nov. 7, 6 to 9 p.m., at Kahn Auction Barnis, 2699 Brock Rd. N. (just south of Taunton Road in Pickering. Apparently one reason the extension into Durham is being proposed, is because Markham doesn't want al the cars and trucks going on or off the 407 to clog Up their roads. I guess that traffic wont bother Durham residents living on the sideroads and regional roada from Brougham to Brooklin. The planned 407 route is just south of Highway 7. The extension seems te ho on the fast track and may wel mean that, in as littie as three years' time, bulldozers will be plowing the greenfields' of Durham instead of farm, tractors. The telephone numrber for the group of Durham organizations that have formed a coalition on Sustainable Transportation te, oppose Hlighway 407 is 436-2376 (ask for Libby).
